URSB Issues Public Notice on Renewal of Expired Trademarks

Uganda Registration Services Bureau issued a Public Notice advising trademark owners with expired marks to renew their marks within 30 days from 25th July 2022. Failure to renew the mark will result in the mark being struck off the register.

We highlight key provisions regarding renewal of expired trademarks under the Trademarks Act, 2010 and the Trademarks Regulations, 2012.

    1. Duration and Renewal of Trademark

Registration of a trademark is for period of 7 years and is renewable every 10 years upon payment of a prescribed fee.

2. Process of Renewal

A person fills form TM 10 (form for renewal) and files it with the registrar at any time but not more than 3 months before the expiration of the last registration of the trademark.

If a person seeking renewal is not the registered trademark owner, that person shall sign a statement indicating that they are directed by the registered proprietor to renew the trademark.
